Hayesfield Mixed Sixth Form hosted a Question Time style Hustings, with the Bath Parliamentary candidates: Ben Howlett (Conservative), Oliver Middleton (Labour), Julian Deverell (UKIP), Steve Bradley (Liberal Democrats) and Dominic Tristram (Greens) Lorraine Morgan-Brinkhurst could not attend but sent written answers to the four pre-set questions.
Six Sixth Form students: Tommy Whitehead, Harriet Evans, Sophie White, Clare Kendall, Ruby Daniels and Emily Current introduced the candidates with short biographies. The A-Level students had provided four set questions to the candidates which they were each given one minute to answer. Emily Cross timed the answers and the Chair, Head of Sixth Form, Kerry McCullagh ensured the candidates kept to time.
Sixth Formers Jordan Harrup and Georgina Oxford then took roaming microphones into the audience and the debate hotted up as candidates were allowed just thirty seconds and the Chair encouraged come backs and a more spontaneous debate. Education, foreign aid, Europe, austerity, the environment and Bath’s travel infrastructure were amongst the questions posed.
After the debate the candidates stayed late into the night to speak individually to constituents over refreshments. As our Year 13 prepare to vote for the first time, the Hustings marked the start of the Hayesfield mock election campaign as the school makes the most of the General Election to prepare its students for their role in democratic society.

The Regional Youth Orchestra Artiance Alkmaar comprises of 75 talented young musicians aged from 10-18 years, under the inspired leadership of their conductor Otto de Jong.
They play in the Netherlands and further afield in Europe, performing a wide variety of music from classical to jazz and pop.
Their visit to Bath this year commemorates a link that was forged between Bath and Alkmaar in 1945 when residents of Bath sent money and food to Alkmaar, where people were dying of hunger during the last year of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.
This talented youth orchestra comes to Bath 70 years later, inspired by the kindness of the City and seeking to perpetuate this important link.
Their playing will offer us the opportunity to reflect through music on Peace and Reconciliation.
In preparation for the return visit of the German students in September we are looking for a family to host one of the German girls to replace a relocating family.
Whilst we cannot offer payment for hosting, in the past this has worked well if a family has required some conversational German, support at home with German homework or if a student wanted to take part in the exchange but was unable to travel to Germany. Please contact Ms Shail at school if you are interested or if you think you might be able to help.

All of our subject leads have created a ‘Personal Learning Checklist’ for their subject’s GCSE Exam. Students (and parents!) should use these to ensure that all areas of the curriculum are covered in preparation for the final exam.
The PLCs are available to download on the Year 11 Academic Support page.
Bath and North East Somerset, in partnership with Sustrans have been working in local schools, including Hayesfield, with the aim of increasing the number of pupils travelling ‘actively’ to school (walking, cycling or taking public transport for those living further away).
They are producing a series of videos about active travelling to school and will be filming for the film about cycling to school at Hayesfield Brougham Hayes on Tuesday 24th March 2014.
This will mean that some parts of the Brougham Hayes will have filming taking place and students may be asked to use a different route around the school. Once the films are produced they will be used on the Bath and North East Somerset Council website & their Youtube channel.
We are very excited about making this film with film company ‘Suited and Booted’ Studios CIC on 24th March and want to include as many students as possible. If however you do not want your child to be part of the filming process, please contact Mrs Vermeeren (Pastoral Manager Years 8 & 9) A.Vermeeren@hayesfield.com or contact the school on 01225 426151.
Pupils at Hayesfield who are part of the school’s rowing club teamed up to complete an exhausting 24-hour rowing challenge.
The school club is made up of pupils from year nine to year 11 who are selected at the beginning of the year for their performance.
They row at Minerva Boat Club on Thursday afternoons and are coached by Hayesfield staff Chole Orchin and Fran Foster.
The challenge, on February 27, was held to raise money for club fees and much needed kit.
Head teacher Emma Yates said: “Our school motto is achieving ambitions and the action of these girls embodies that philosophy.
“The money raised from this sponsored event will allow the team to train in all weather conditions. The drive and determination show by the girls has been immense.
“They have successfully raised funds for the kit they need to achieve their ambition to be first class rowers.”
